The library began as a home-based reading center to which Mrs. Emily Heintzelman
gave
many books. The land for the original building was deeded to the trustees of
the
Heintzelman Library by Laura A. and Scott Barton.
In 1907 the stone and wood building which first housed the Horicon Free Public
Library was completed and inscribed as the Heintzelman Library.
Twenty-five years later, the town of Horicon assumed responsibility and to
the present
year the library has been tax supported.
In 2001 the Town built a Community Center, including a larger library.
This enabled us
to meet State standards and to better meet the needs of the community.
Shortly after the
move to town hall, the Friends of Horicon Free Public Library was formed
to meet the
expanding needs of the community. What began as a small group has now grown
in
membership to over 225. One of our goals is to purchase items for the library
that are not
covered by its operational budget. For example, we have installed a bulletin
board, signs
identifying the book categories, storage shelves and counters for the computers.
With the
money raised by summer book sales, we have been able to purchase new tables
and
chairs.
We meet the second Thursday of each month during the months of June thru
October at
4:00PM in the community center at Town Hall. A web site is in the works.
We invite
membership participation. Annual dues are: $5.00 and $10.00 for individual
and family
membership, respectively.
Some of the free special programs, workshops and classes we conduct or
sponsor
throughout the year are shown below (partial listing):
In August, 2008, we will have “An Evening with Rocky and Irma,
who are well known
writers of television programs, plays and books. They have agreed to
come to the
Library and spend an evening talking about their life experiences.
The Friends of Horicon Free Public Library annual book sale will be held
this year on
August 2nd, in the Town Hall Community Center between the hours of 10AM
to 2:00PM.

Items are loaned for two weeks unless otherwise stated. DVDs and VHS tapes are loaned for seven days. Videos are loaned for a shorter time period, with a limit of three per visit. Most items are renewable. When renewing materials it is preferred that you bring them to the library for renewal. If you renew by phone, please have your library card and the items to be renewed with you at the phone. A book drop is available for off-hours returns.
Materials owned by the Horicon Free Library that are not currently available may be reserved at the circulation desk. If the library does not own the item you want, we will try to locate it for you and order it through Interlibrary Loan. Subject requests beyond our resources may be handled by the central reference library, Crandall Library in Glens Falls.
Relatives and friends of deceased persons are encouraged to contribute monetary donations for special book purchases. Those books will carry memorial name plates, to your specification, and make meaningful additions to the collection.
