Highway Department News Update

The Horicon Highway Department has a contract with the county to plow county roads consisting of 26 miles, within the Town of Horicon jurisdiction.

As part of the first year’s administration of the new town garage ― to provide efficient and cost savings solutions for maintaining adequate highway infrastructure ― we have installed a new purchasing program, that has already saved thousands of dollars in all aspects of purchasing, such as in equipment and materials, personnel as well as road maintenance.

The new expanded town garage of 11,200 sq. ft. was completed in December, 2007.  There are ten bays for housing and maintaining trucks in a heated environment.  Regular maintenance records are now computerized.  Also included is a break room for a quick cup of coffee during the winter months.  The superintendent office has internet capacity to check on weather reports and to obtain broader comparative vendor price quotes. We now have a larger storage area for parts inventory.  Also added is a new high pressure water system to facilitate cleaning salt and debris off trucks during the winter months.

As we all know, this past winter season has been one of the wettest on record, with frequent precipitation events (in the form of snow, freezing rain, hail falling as often as several times a week). The highway crew has had to work around the clock on many weeks with little time for a break.  As Highway Superintendent, I am proud of the extraordinary efforts taken by my crew-ever conscious for citizen safety, especially during this time.

We have met our goals such as installing mechanical controls on trucks to limit the amount of sand that is spread on roads, and to keep trucks serviced and washed on a regular weekly schedule after each run. Additionally, the public sand pile is now safely accessible. We continue to provide continuous refresher courses in the use of safety equipment.
